Chapter 17

March 12th, 2012

Warren Park, Indiana

“We need to talk.”

“About?” I asked her as I peeled off my jacket and hung it on the back of the door and then waited while Gevona did the same.

“About me…about us.”

“There is no ‘us’,” I remarked back to her, while trying to keep my tone even. Turning away from her at that, I walked out of the little entry hall and headed toward the kitchen. It was late, but our habit had always been to eat something after shift. Lots of things had changed in the last couple of months but that hadn’t.

“I knew you would make this hard.”

“Make what hard? I’ve done nothing the last couple of months but try to get over myself and stay friends with you. You’ve been aloof and downright standoffish.” I said my piece matter-of-factly because I really believed it was true. She’d been distant ever since our falling out on New Year’s Day. We still shared rides to and from work but they were often made in stilted silence.

Thank heaven we don’t patrol in pairs! I couldn’t stand to be partnered up with her right now!

Figuring on just throwing things for a sandwich together, I was peering into the fridge when she came into the kitchen behind me.

“Are you listening to me?”

“Yes,” I answered but I kept digging.

“I wanted you to be the first to know…after the Sheriff that is; I took a patrol job with Indy. I handed in my resignation tonight.”

I bumped my head on the upper part of the fridge where it meets the freezer as I pulled out of the box quickly. “You what?” I asked her as I rubbed the back of my head hard to try and dissipate the pain.

“I gave him two weeks’ notice.”

“How long have you been working on that?”

“Not as long as you think.”

“I’m not thinking anything right now Gevona; I’m just trying to process it.”

“Indy isn’t technically hiring right now. They do interviews on a rolling basis, as needed though for experienced cops. Lacy Baumgarten got on there and she recommended me. Remember her from when we first started patrol?”

When I just shrugged, she went on. “I got an interview and I got on.”

“That’s what you want?”

She nodded. “I’ve always wanted to be on a big department, work my way up. We talked about that a long time ago. This,” she waved her hand around, “Hancock, was my foot in the door.”

“I see.” That’s what I said to her, but I really didn’t see. We were busy in Hancock County and Gevona was a good Deputy. This has something to do me; she’s not fooling anybody but herself.

“We’re both getting ready to sit for the Detective exam. You do well, you have a real shot to move up with Hancock now. You know you’re going to start right back at the bottom again in Indy.”

She looked away from me and mumbled something.

“What? I didn’t catch that.”

“I said, that’s not all.”

“What’s not all?” I was confused and my head still hurt making me just want to sit down.
